Unexpected - Script

Here's another script I entered into a contest a few years back. Didn't win, but did get honorable mention, again. I don't remember the prompt - but I believe it had to do with the word unexpected.

Enjoy.

INT. BASEMENT

A blast from the past, a basement/family room. Once littered with toys of a child, now littered with the toys of a man who never grew up.

FINN (30s) sits on his pull-out, arms behind his head, with a big smile on his gruffy face.

SYDNEY (mid 30s), half dressed, in a bra and pants, searches Finn's clutter.

FINN

That was unexpected.

Sydney squats, looking under a coffee table covered in comic books and various types of nerdy memorabilia.

SYDNEY

What?

FINN

I said that was unexpected.

SYDNEY

Yeah. Sure.

Finding nothing under the table, Sydney moves her search to under the pull out. Not finding anything, Sydney pops up, only to find Finn's face in front of hers.

FINN

Where you heading so fast?

(playfully)

I know you don't have to work.

Sydney looks up at Finn.

SYDNEY

Can we not let anyone at work find out about this?

FINN

Oh, right. Yeah, of course.

SYDNEY

Not even Chuckie.

Finn laughs.

FINN

He wouldn't believe me.

Finn looks deep into Sydney's eyes.

FINN (CONT'D)

(longingly)

You sure you don't want to stick around?

Sydney's eyes light up, she smiles. Finn leans in. Sydney reaches over Finn, pulling her blouse off the back of the pull-out.

SYDNEY

No. Not really.

She pulls the blouse over her head.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

But thanks.

Sydney moves towards the stairs, looking for something. No luck. She whips around. Finding Finn, awkwardly smiling.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

The hell?

She dodges him, and continues searching. He follows her towards a pile of clothing, hovering over as she digs through.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

Finn. What? What is it?

FINN

I'm scared.

Sydney stops searching and looks up at him.

SYDNEY

Of what?

FINN

Rejection.

Sydney turns back to the pile. Finding her shoes under a DMB hoodie.

SYDNEY

Okay?

Sydney stands, shoes in hand.

FINN

I don't want to hold it in.

SYDNEY

Hold what in?

Sydney sees a pile of clothing, she hasn't searched through yet. She clumsily puts on her shoes, moving towards the new pile. Finn follows, nervously. Sydney kicks through the pile.

FINN

I love you.

Stacy continues kicking.

SYDNEY

Good for you.

She kicks again. No luck. She moves on towards his book shelf. Finn follows.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

But, you clearly misinterpreted our situation.

She shifts through the shelves.

FINN

We have a connection. I know you felt it last night.

SYDNEY

The only thing I felt was your dick.

She moves towards the pull-out again. Now pulling up the bedding. Finn looks hurt. Sydney softens.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

It was good. It was fine. But it wasn't love.

She moves towards the stairs again.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

And I can't be committed to someone who lives in their parent's basement.

FINN

(Slightly annoyed)

My parent's basement bomb shelter.

SYDNEY

(Not impressed)

Right.

She sees her purse under a pair of old moon shoes.

SYDNEY (CONT'D)

Thank Christ.

As Sydney slings her purse on her shoulder and makes her way up to the first step, her phone begins emitting a loud warning signal.

"WARNING! SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY!"

Sirens fill the air outside. A loud roar. A huge impact, the room shakes. The room darkens. Sydney screams. Emergency lights flash on. Sydney sits, staring up at where

the stairs once stood. Now just a crumpled mess of wood.

SYDNEY

What was that?

Finn helps Sydney up, placing her on the pull-out. He stands on the pull-out and looks out his window. He laughs, overcome with joy.

FINN

It's fate.

Sydney pushes Finn away and looks out the window. Her eyes widen. She falls to the pull-out, laughing. Finn laughs with her for a moment. He pulls her in for an embrace. He holds her tight

FINN (CONT'D)

I know it might be tough to love me, but I think you can do it.

Sydney's laughter slowly shifts to sobs.

CUT TO BLACK.
