Another one bites the dust

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

Unfortunately, your submission wasn't selected to move on to the next round.

Once again, my inbox greets me with another rejection.

Thank goodness I'm used to rejection.

Here was my submission for the 48 Writerduet Screenplay Challenge:

FADE UP

Int. KINDER’S OFFICE -TUESDAY MORNING

KINDER THOMAS (a very young looking late 20s), sits at his gray metal desk. Surrounding him on the walls are black and white photos of body builders with inspirational quotes like

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

If You Can Believe It, You Can Achieve It

Hanging behind him is a photo of a naked body builder - tastefully in shadow - staring up at a mountain with the phrase - NOW OR NEVER.

Kinder wears an oversized business suit - way too large for his small frame. He sits at his desk, eating from a bowl of boiled eggs in front of him.

KINDER

Ang, we’ve been here before.

He stuffs an egg in his mouth. Coughs. Splattering pieces of eggs on a magazine entitled “QUICK REPS” with an extreme close up of oiled up pecs on his desk.

KINDER

And frankly, I’m tired of it.

He takes another egg and this time takes a smaller bite. He continues.

KINDER

I’m tired of this anger you’re throwing at me. Everyday. You seem to want to destroy the working order we have here. Why is that Ang? Why do you want chaos? Destruction? Huh?

AHN KWAN (early 30s) sits across from KINDER. She wears a cheaply made Statue of Liberty Costume, on her head she wears a pair of sunglasses, and leaning against her chair, is a large arrow shaped sign with the words : QUICK PAYDAY LOANS.

AHN

Naw, dude. I just want to wear my sunglasses when I’m on the street. The sun hurts my eyes. Also, it’s Ahn. Not Ang.

Kinder sighs as he pushes the eggs away from him and stands, walking in front of his desk. He perches himself on the edge. His feet almost touch Ahn’s. She pulls her feet back.

KINDER

See. There it is. The pushback. Do you understand what it takes to run a successful business? Do you? Tell me.

AHN

Are you asking for suggestions..cause like, I think I’m not the person you should be asking. Lianne in accounting is pretty smart, I bet she could he-

KINDER

Do you want to fight me?

Ahn laughs and leans back in her chair.

AHN

No?

KINDER Are you unsure?

He leans closer to her. She leans back.

AHN

Dude, I just want to wear my sunnies outside. I respect you and your position here at this legitimate, successful, not predatory business at all.

KINDER

Fight me.

AHN

Why?

KINDER I know you want to. That’s the reason you took this job.

AHN

Obviously you misunderstand the purpose of a job, sir.

KINDER

Come on. Do it.

Kinder reaches behind him and takes an egg from his bowl. He takes a bite as he leans closer to her.

KINDER

I’ll let you wear your sunglasses. Isn’t that what you want? Sunglasses.

AHN

Yeah, but not like that, dude.

Kinder laughs.

KINDER

What other way is there?

AHN

Words work. Hands hurt, man. Simple enough.

Kinder leans over her chair, placing his hands on the arms of Ahn’s chair.

KINDER The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to conquer.

AHN What in the absolute hell -

KINDER Fight me for what you want.

AHN

I don’t want -

KINDER

If you win, I’ll leave you alone. Forever. It’s now or never.

AHN

I do-

KINDER

Fight me. Fight me. Fight me! Fight me! FIGHT ME!!!

Kinder gets louder and louder and louder until -

CUT TO BLACK

FADE UP

EXT. STREET CORNER

AHN stands on the street corner in her Statue of Liberty costume. She flips the sign around. She turns to face the camera. Her eye is blackened, her lip busted, and her nose bleeding.

She smiles as she pulls the sunglasses from her pocket and puts them on.
